"Evolving" Attitudes, Gay Marriage, and Jesus

President Obama, who claims to be a Christian, has recently “evolved” to support gay marriage. When MSNBC’s Chris Matthews interviewed Bishop Harry Jackson, an African American pastor who has spoken out against the President’s endorsement of gay marriage, Matthews said he hoped Bishop Jackson would “evolve.”

The mainstream media in our country portrays any objection to the homosexual lifestyle, or to redefining marriage to include same-sex couples, as bigotry, or radical, or on the wrong side of history. Not evolved.

This blog is my attempt to “admire Christ.” I have no desire to be political. I want to lift up the character of Jesus. But the President’s recent "evolution" made me ask, So what does Jesus say about these things? Has Christ evolved? Or will He?

I guess “evolving” means changing to something better. At least I think that’s what people mean when they say they’ve evolved. Like they were in some primeval state, and now they’re highly advanced.

Which means, of course, that the traditional view of marriage must be primitive. The advanced idea must be that two people of any gender can become sexual with one another and call it marriage. And if you’re evolved, you better call it marriage, too.

So would it be even more evolved to say that marriage can be the union of three people of whatever gender? Does it take “evolution” to the next level if there’s no age limit on any of the parties involved? Like, for example, a pedophile and his four-year-old love interest? Or how about evolving so marriage can include other species in the mix: a man and a pony, for example. That’s super-evolved, isn’t it?

Okay, forgive my cynicism.

Here’s a better question: for those of us who love and follow Christ, where is Jesus on this? He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." Matthew 19:4-6.

While the question Jesus is answering is about divorce, notice that He defines marriage, and that He does so by quoting Genesis 2:24. It’s obvious that, for Jesus, there are only two people involved in marriage. One is a man and the other is a woman.

It’s also worth noting that Jesus' reference point was not polling data, the opinions of His friends or family, or keeping up with the times. Christ has an inviolable standard of truth—the holy Scriptures. Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Matthew 5:17-18

So does the Savior need to “evolve?” I hope you think that’s a ridiculous question. Because He’s the best already. He’s the Standard, the Alpha and Omega, the highest, purest, smartest, wisest, kindest ever known on this planet. So He’s not changing.

And if evolving means moving away from Him and His word, neither should we.
